Updates on New Zealand Trade Marks Practice

The New Zealand Intellectual Property Office (IPONZ) approved several amendments to its regulations on 8 November 2012. The amendments will come into force on 10 December 2012. These are the most relevant updates to the trade marks system:

  • New Zealand is going to join the Madrid Protocol. IPONZ has also amended its legislation in order to comply with the Singapore Treaty and accede to the Nice Agreement.

  • IPONZ will introduce a new schedule of fees; applications filed after 10 December 2012 will cost NZ$150 per class and renewals will be NZ$350 per class.

There is another set of changes on the way in order to streamline the administration proceedings and improve the operation of the regulations. These amendments will come into force in 2013.
