Rhys Munzel is a lawyer and patent attorney. Prior to joining FAL Lawyers he was a Hearings Officer and Senior Examiner of Patents at IP Australia. He is well versed in patentability opinion work. As a Senior Examiner, Rhys oversaw contentious matters such as re-examination, as well as further examination involving multiple adverse reports or serious factual disputes. He also has extensive expertise in patent opposition procedures. As a Hearing Officer he arbitrated disputes over substantive patent issues such as manner of manufacture, novelty and inventive step, and s 40 issues such as best method of performance. Rhys represented IP Australia internationally as part of the Vancouver Group, sharing and developing best practice examination approaches with the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Rhys has also presented in various fora including appearing on discussion panels on patentability issues and presenting searching and examination practices to IP firms and commercialisation agents.
Rhys completed his Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) and Laws degrees from the University of Melbourne. He later completed a Masters in Industrial Property Law from the University of Technology, Sydney and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University.
